August 20, 2023BREAST REDUCTION
Breast reduction surgery is a frequently preferred method in the field of breast aesthetics. Especially for women who experience large breasts at a young age, this can lead to psychological disorders. In addition, beyond aesthetic concerns, in some cases, breast reduction surgeries may be required due to health problems. Large breast tissue can negatively affect the skeletal system; the body can be forced forward due to the weight, which can lead to health problems such as cervical herniated discs, hunching in the back, and pinched nerves in the arms. According to scientific research, about half of women with bra cup sizes D or larger complain of pain in the upper back, shoulders, neck and lower back.
Breast reduction surgeries, one of the most preferred procedures in the field of breast aesthetics, may be required not only for women but also for men. Breast reduction surgery in men is usually called gynecomastia surgery. Breast reduction surgeries performed in women usually aim to reduce the weight and sagging of the breast tissue.

IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE BREAST IMAGING BEFORE SURGERY?
It is possible to see the condition of the breast, whether there is any cystic or carcinogenic pathology with mammography to be taken before breast reduction surgery. For this reason, the breast should be evaluated for these risks by breast examination, breast ultrasound or mammography before surgery. In addition, another reason for mammography is to obtain a reference image for future mammograms due to the anatomy that will change after surgery. Because seeing the first state of the breast provides a great advantage in making the correct diagnosis for the radiologist who will interpret the mammograms to be performed after the reduction surgery.
HOW IS BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY PERFORMED?
The surgery aims to move the sagging nipple to a higher point, reduce breast size when necessary, remove excess skin and breast tissue and shape the remaining tissue. The duration of surgery may vary depending on the size of the breasts and the surgical technique used. On average, an operation time of 2-3 hours is usually observed. It is best to make the decision about which breast reduction method is best for you together with your doctor. Many factors such as age, breastfeeding plans and breast size influence the breast reduction technique to be applied.
Breast reduction surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia. During surgery, the nipple (areola) is moved to the desired position and the breast is shaped. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed. Depending on the method used, the scar may be in the form of a line around the areola and downward at a right angle to it (vertical mammoplasty). Sometimes an "inverted T" shaped scar involving the inframammary fold can also be seen. The postoperative scar is usually located in the breast groove under the breast and is usually not obvious when viewed from the opposite side.
After surgery, drains can be used to remove contaminated blood and the patient wears an underwire sports bra after surgery. Approximately 4 hours after the operation, the patient can walk slowly and consume light foods. An overnight stay in hospital is usually recommended. After removal of the drains, the patient may be able to take a bath. It may be necessary to wear a seamless sports bra without underwire for about a month. It is recommended to avoid heavy physical activity for up to a week after surgery, but you can return to light work.
BREASTFEEDING AFTER SURGERY AND CANCER RISK
For women who expect to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery, it is very important to choose a suitable technique. In order to preserve breastfeeding function, techniques that protect the milk ducts and nipple connection more are preferred. However, it should be noted that no technique or surgeon can guarantee breastfeeding. The ability to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery may vary depending on individual factors, surgical method and personal anatomy.
Breast reduction surgery does not cause cancer. In fact, the breast tissues removed during surgery are sent for pathological examination. This means that even foci of cancer that cannot be detected on mammography but are present in tissue fragments can be detected. Thanks to this method, the risk of cancer can be taken into account and necessary precautions can be taken.
