Gynecomastia is known as excessive breast enlargement in men and is usually benign. The condition affects one in three men and can occur at different ages, from infancy to old age. Adolescence is one of the most common times. Research in Turkey shows that the incidence of gynecomastia in adolescent males is approximately 35 percent.
Gynecomastia usually does not pose a health risk. However, it can cause serious psychological problems in men because it creates a "feminine" appearance. The question "Will gynecomastia go away without surgery?" comes up frequently. Unfortunately, the long-term gynecomastia condition has a low tendency to resolve spontaneously. Medical treatment methods can be used, but sometimes aesthetic surgery may also be required.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is usually caused by an imbalance between the female hormone estrogen and the male hormone testosterone. If the amount of testosterone in the body decreases or the amount of estrogen increases, the risk of gynecomastia may increase. These hormone changes can have many causes. Some conditions may be natural, while others may be caused by another underlying health problem.
WHO CAN GET GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia in infancy is usually caused by the hormone estrogen passed from the mother during childbirth and usually resolves spontaneously within a few weeks. Gynecomastia seen during puberty is one of the most common types and may develop due to hormone irregularities. In 90 percent of cases, it usually resolves spontaneously within 6 months to 2 years.
In adults, gynecomastia is more common in the 50-69 age range. Gynecomastia can be detected in one out of every four men in this age range. Some medications can also cause gynecomastia. Medications that can cause gynecomastia include anti-androgen drugs used to treat prostate enlargement or cancer, anabolic steroids, androgens, some anxiety medications, antidepressants, some antibiotics, ulcer medications, chemotherapy treatments or certain heart medications.
In addition, some health problems affecting hormone balance can also cause gynecomastia.
HOW IS GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY PERFORMED?
Examination and ultrasound examination are necessary to diagnose gynecomastia and plan its treatment. Before proceeding with surgical treatment, the patient is evaluated for underlying hormonal imbalances. Treatment options are determined by the type of gynecomastia. Medical treatments are tailored to the patient's age, hormonal levels and underlying medical causes.
Surgical intervention is the most effective and definitive solution in the treatment of gynecomastia. Different surgical methods are used according to the type of gynecomastia. In glandular type gynecomastia, breast tissue is dense and may need to be surgically removed. In mixed type gynecomastia, both glandular tissue and fat tissue may be excessive; in this case, liposuction can be used in addition to the surgical method. In fatty type gynecomastia, fat tissue is predominant and liposuction is usually sufficient.
Gynecomastia treatment should be customized according to the patient's condition and needs. Your doctor will therefore carry out an examination and assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment option.
POST-OPERATIVE PERIOD
If an implant is to be placed in the breast augmentation operation, a single incision is made at one of the three points. After making an incision in the crease under the breast, under the arm or around the nipple, the surgeon separates the breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of the breast, thus creating a pocket. The implant is placed in this pocket and the breast
centered behind the tip. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel, while Saline implants are placed empty and filled with sterile saline. After placement, the surgical site is closed with sutures and covered with skin adhesive and surgical tape.
bandaging. The choice of incision site is important to minimize scar formation. Depending on the general condition of the patient and the doctor's preference, an overnight hospital stay may be required. Sometimes the patient can be discharged home the same night.
In some cases, it may also be necessary to place a drain in the breast tissue to remove contaminated blood. Drains are usually easily removed the next day without surgical intervention. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. However, it can sometimes be performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation. The operation takes about 1 to 2 hours.
THINGS TO CONSIDER AFTER SURGERY
When Vaser or laser liposuction is preferred in the treatment of gynecomastia based on fat tissue, the healing process may be more comfortable. With these treatment methods, patients usually start to see real results after about 3 weeks and can perform most daily activities with ease. When surgical intervention is necessary, the operation can be performed under general anesthesia or sometimes under local anesthesia. The patient is usually discharged on the same day. Edema and swelling may be seen in the area after surgery, but usually resolves spontaneously within a week. For the healing process and the comfort of the patient, it is important to rest and not to move the arms and shoulders excessively in the first three days. Showering is allowed from the third day after the operation, but only for a short time.
After gynecomastia surgery, patients need to use a gynecomastia corset for a while. The corset should be worn immediately after surgery and worn continuously for the period specified by the doctor. This usually takes between 2 and 3 weeks. After the third week, it may be useful to wear the brace only during the day, especially during heavy activities. Corset use can usually be discontinued after 6 weeks.
